FAQ
On this page we try to answer some frequently asked questions that we receive. The answers are not organized and will be added as new questions appear, which you can send to helpdesk@toplist.eu.
Is the service paid or free?
The service is free of charge. It is possible to purchase an extended service TOPlist Profi.
What is TOPlist ID?
TOPlist ID is a number that distinguishes individual registered websites. It is therefore an integral part of the measurement code, serves for access to settings about the page and statistics. You will receive it immediately after registration. Later you can find it by searching your page in detailed information.
What is the difference between visit and view?
The values that are measured and the way they are recorded are described in the Measurement Methodology.
What is "reload"?
"Reload" means that someone accessed the page for the second time in a row from the same IP and is not counted towards the total number of visits (so that no one can simply "click themselves up" to higher traffic). So it doesn't matter if you use the "refresh" button, this attempt should be ignored.
Can detailed statistics also be obtained for a longer period?
Yes. With the extended TOPlist Profi service, you can track detailed statistics up to one year back.
How is advertising on TOPlist?
The main advertising spaces are two: on the homepage (two positions) and on the category list page (also two positions). On the homepage, placement is exclusive (meaning the ad is shown to every visitor). On category pages, multiple ads rotate, but the display time (view-time) is longer, so there's more time for animated banners etc. For more information and prices, contact reklama@toplist.eu.
How do I find my ID?
You will receive your ID after registration. You can find it by first searching for your page (e.g., using the Search function) and then clicking on detailed statistics (the graph icon on the right). The ID is shown in the table at the top of the page. If your page is newly registered (less than 1 day), it is also listed in the News section.
What is displayed in the rankings?
When you click on a category, a list appears like this:
- Position of the server in the given category. The first 10 servers have their order marked with an icon, others are shown with text. Calculated based on average traffic over the last 7 days.
- Arrow indicating traffic trend (green - growth over 10%, blue - stagnation, red - drop over 10%)
- Numerical expression of traffic change. Calculated as the ratio between average traffic and today's estimated traffic.
- Server name. If you hover your mouse over it, a more detailed description may appear (if filled in).
- Average traffic. Calculated over the last 7 days.
- Number of visits since server registration.
- Visits today - main measured value. A visit is one user per 30 minutes. So if they return after this time, it's counted again. Otherwise, it's only recorded as "reload".
- Pageview - number of page views. This is essentially the sum of "visits" plus "reloads" without distinction.
- Date of server registration.
- How long the server has been registered.
- Prediction of today's traffic. For simplicity (i.e. speed) of calculation, it is a linear regression.
- Link to more detailed statistics of individual servers. If you hover the mouse over it for a while, the page ID is shown.
What should the link look like when I want to find out where visitors came from and show a counter starting from 1723?
This uses almost all parameters:
<a href="https://www.toplist.eu/" target="_top">
<script language="JavaScript">
</script>
<noscript>
<img SRC="https://toplist.eu/count.asp?logo=counter&start=1723&ID=yourID" border="0" alt="TOPlist" width="88" height="31">
</noscript>
</a>
WARNING: After top.document.referrer there is a comma, apostrophe and quote. Not three apostrophes!!! But it's better to use the measurement code form.
I registered my page but it still shows 0 accesses in the rankings.
Registration alone is not sufficient for measurement. You need to record traffic somehow. And that's what the measurement code does, which must be placed on the page. You can get it most quickly by generating it in this form.
Should the measurement code be placed on every page or just on the homepage?
The code must be placed on all pages whose traffic should be counted. It can be assumed that there will be visitors who "skip" the homepage (e.g., come directly from a search engine to a subpage) and they would not be recorded.
Why isn't weekly traffic in Infopanel calculated from Monday?
That would mean that on Monday, traffic would only be for 1 day (Monday), on Tuesday for two days, etc. Therefore, a "floating week" is calculated, i.e., the last 7 days.
Weekly email with traffic not arriving
Check if the spam filter is set incorrectly and the email isn't ending up in the trash. Also note that traffic is sent from a different email address report@toplist.eu than other emails (registration, editing, password), so it might be discarded only by that. Every week, several hundred thousand of these emails are sent out, some mail servers (especially free-mail services) may incorrectly consider this traffic as spam. The report@toplist.eu address is used only for sending reports and nothing else — if you mark it as trusted in your email (or exempt it from spam checks), you have certainty that the report will always arrive.
Another possibility is that emails bounce back from that address (full mailbox notifications, auto-replies etc.). If we receive such emails three times, sending is stopped automatically. After fixing the cause, simply edit your TOPlist entry and sending resumes.
In any case, you can find the whole traffic history since registration in the detailed statistics of the page.
How to cancel registration?
First, remove the measurement code from your pages. Then you can delete the page - the Delete link in the right menu in detailed statistics. If the measurement code is still found (i.e., there was a visit recorded in the last two days), instead of delete, a list of these pages will be shown for verification.
Foreign domain appears in measured domains
"Measured domains" show addresses where the measurement code is placed and which have at least 10% share of total traffic. Data has a 2-day history, so any change will only appear after they expire. If an unknown domain appears, there's likely a code with your ID on it. Specific pages can be found in the Entry pages statistic. If no agreement with the operator of those pages is possible, the Security code can be used to prevent counting from foreign pages.
After switching pages to SSL(HTTPS), measurement stopped working
In the measurement code, simply replace http:// with https://. Alternatively, regenerate the measurement code - it will now be generated in an HTTPS version.
We moved our pages to a different address. What should we do?
Nothing! 🙂 If this is only a change of address and the pages still contain the same measurement code (with the same ID), measurement will continue on the new address. You can update the address in the TOPlist entry edit so that the link points to the correct address, but it doesn't affect the measurement itself.
Does TOPlist comply with GDPR?
Yes. Information about personal data collected, reasons and time limits for their processing can be found on the Personal Data page.
Why is there a dash instead of an address in statistics?
A dash instead of an address means that the visitor's browser did not pass information about which page they are viewing. This happens when the page is secured with TLS (HTTPS) but still uses the old measurement code that measured over HTTP. The simple solution is to change http:// to https:// in the measurement code (so it will be https://toplist.eu, etc.). Or you can generate and use a new measurement code that already includes HTTPS.
